Icon of Sin è il primo full-length di AydrA, pubblicato nel 1999 da Sound Machine Recordings dopo il mini CD Psycho Pain Control (1995, Dawn of Sadness). Composto tra il 1995 e il 1997 e registrato nel 1998 da David Lenci, l'album segna la maturazione tecnica della band marchigiana e il suo ingresso a pieno titolo nel canone del death metal italiano.

Le influenze dichiarate — Death, Cynic, Atheist, Pestilence — sono il punto di partenza di una scrittura che mescola tecnicità estrema, melodia e cura dello storytelling: dieci tracce in cui ogni passaggio è ragionato, ma il pugno arriva sempre dritto.

La ristampa CD del 2026 (Rude Awakening Records, RA21) è l'edizione definitiva: dopo la ristampa vinile pubblicata sempre da Rude Awakening nel 2024, qui l'album torna rimasterizzato da Marco Bianchella ai White Rock Studios e arricchito da quattro bonus live esclusive registrate dalla current line-up nei concerti del 2025 — un brano per ogni album della discografia: Carnage (Psycho Pain Control), Icon of Sin, Hyperlogical Non-sense e Forever Hide (Leave to Nowhere). Una sintesi totale di trent'anni di carriera.

Icon of Sin is AydrA's first full-length, released in 1999 on Sound Machine Recordings after the Psycho Pain Control mini CD (1996, Dawn of Sadness). Composed between 1995 and 1997 and recorded in 1998 by David Lenci, the album marks the technical maturity of the band from Italy's Marche region and their full entry into the canon of Italian death metal.

Their stated influences — Death, Cynic, Atheist, Pestilence — are the starting point for a songwriting style that blends extreme technicality, melody, and storytelling: ten tracks where every passage is calculated, but the punch always lands.

Gli AydrA, pionieri del technical death metal italiano, nascono nel 1985 evolvendo dal thrash verso sonorità sempre più complesse e feroci. Dopo gli acclamati Icon of Sin e Hyperlogical Non-sense, la band torna nel 2024 con Leave to Nowhere, un concept potente e attuale che segna il ritorno definitivo della loro furia tecnica.

Le radici della band affondano a Falconara (AN) nel 1985, sotto il moniker Hydra: nel 1986 esce il primo demo "Sons of Rha", seguito da "Near the Graveyard" e "Into the Crypta" — tre cassette in territorio power/thrash metal. Nel 1991, con l'ingresso di Mauro Pacetti (basso/voce) e Francesco Olivi (chitarra), la band sposta il proprio sound verso il thrash/death tecnico ispirato da Death, Cynic, Atheist, Megadeth e Annihilator. Nel 1993 esce Demo 4, primo lavoro firmato AydrA — un cambio di nome che segna lo spartiacque definitivo. Seguirà Penance Stare (1994).

Il talent scout è David Lenci, fonico noto per il lavoro con Uzeda, 3 Second Kiss e One Dimensional Man, oltre che proprietario del Sound Machine Recording. Lo studio registra Psycho Pain Control tra il 1994 e il 1995; l'uscita arriva nel 1996 per Dawn of Sadness Records di Alex De Socchieri, che pubblica anche le compilation Scream from Italy con AydrA in vol. 2 e 3 (vol. 2 contiene una prima versione di "Reflect and Desist"). Nicola Raffaeli entra alla batteria in questa fase. Con l'arrivo di Marcello Lammoglia, la band intraprende un'intensa attività live a fianco di Natron, Undertakers, Sadist, Necromass, Detestor.

Nel 1999 esce per Sound Machine Recordings il primo full-length, Icon of Sin, ancora prodotto da David Lenci e promosso dalla Kick Promotion Agency. L'album riceve un riscontro eccellente da parte della critica nazionale e internazionale: alcune webzine americane lo segnalano tra i migliori dischi di technical death metal del 1999. La band apre i concerti di Napalm Death, Avulsed, Sadist, Infernal Poetry, Dark Lunacy, Disease. Il CD viene ristampato in Malesia e Indonesia.

Nei primi anni 2000 la band lavora su nuovo materiale e nel 2004 pubblica con Frank Andiver di Rising Works / Extreme Rising il secondo full-length Hyperlogical Non-sense, distribuito da Self — con Andrea Mastromarco al basso. La stampa specializzata accoglie con entusiasmo l'album, ma il disco non viene supportato adeguatamente dal vivo: l'uscita di Nicola Raffaeli per motivi personali, il trasferimento di Francesco Olivi in Australia per lavoro, le missioni di Mauro come neo-padre dal 2008 e l'impegno di Mastromarco con Medici Senza Frontiere in Africa portano gli AydrA a interrompere l'attività nel 2007.

Nel 2013, al rientro di Mastromarco dall'Africa, gli AydrA tornano in vita con Luca Calò (Gunfire) e Giuseppe Cardamone (Duality, Zeckyboys) alle chitarre e Marco Bianchella (Gunfire) alla batteria. Dopo una nuova partenza di Mastromarco e l'ingresso di Andrea Massetti al basso, una serie di date nei Balcani come special guest degli Infernal Poetry segna il vero ritorno; da lì parte la lunga gestazione del nuovo album. Nel 2016 esce per un'etichetta russa un'antologia dei primi lavori, mentre inizia la collaborazione con l'etichetta romana Rude Awakening, che cura la pubblicazione in vinile (in edizione limitata) dell'intera discografia, di un album live e della raccolta Rare Tracks.

Ad ottobre 2024, sempre per Rude Awakening, esce — dopo vent'anni di distanza da Hyperlogical Non-sense — il nuovo album Leave to Nowhere, in CD e vinile. Il disco, un concept sul drammatico viaggio di un migrante dall'Eritrea all'Europa, riceve entusiastici consensi sia in Italia che all'estero, viene inserito da diverse testate tra i migliori album dell'anno e ottiene una media recensioni di 8,51/10.

Forti del successo di Leave to Nowhere e con una formazione rinnovata, gli AydrA intraprendono una nuova serie di date in tutta Italia, proponendo una setlist che ripercorre l'intera carriera pluridecennale della band. Nel 2026 Rude Awakening pubblica la ristampa CD definitiva di Icon of Sin, rimasterizzata e arricchita da quattro bonus live esclusive.

The band's roots go back to Falconara (Italy) in 1985, under the name Hydra: their first demo "Sons of Rha" came out in 1986, followed by "Near the Graveyard" and "Into the Crypta" — three power/thrash cassettes. In 1991, with the arrival of Mauro Pacetti (bass/vocals) and Francesco Olivi (guitar), the band shifted toward a more technical thrash/death direction inspired by Death, Cynic, Atheist, Megadeth and Annihilator. In 1993 the band released Demo 4, the first work under the new name AydrA — a definitive turning point. Penance Stare followed in 1994.

The talent scout was David Lenci, sound engineer known for his work with Uzeda, 3 Second Kiss and One Dimensional Man, and owner of Sound Machine Recording. The studio tracked Psycho Pain Control between 1994 and 1995; the release came in 1996 on Dawn of Sadness Records (Alex De Socchieri), the same label behind the compilation Scream from Italy — AydrA appeared on vol. 2 and 3 (vol. 2 included an early version of "Reflect and Desist"). Nicola Raffaeli joined on drums in this phase. With the addition of rhythm guitarist Marcello Lammoglia, AydrA began an intense live activity, sharing the stage with Natron, Undertakers, Sadist, Necromass, Detestor, and many others.

In 1999, the first full-length album Icon of Sin was released via Sound Machine Recordings, once again produced by David Lenci and promoted by Kick Promotion Agency. The album gained strong critical acclaim both nationally and internationally, with several U.S. webzines naming it among the best technical death metal releases of 1999. The band opened for Napalm Death, Avulsed, Sadist, Infernal Poetry, Dark Lunacy, Disease, and other leading acts of the Italian scene. The CD was later reissued in Malaysia and Indonesia.

In the early 2000s, the band started working on new material and connected with Frank Andiver of Rising Works / Extreme Rising, who produced their second full-length Hyperlogical Non-sense in 2004. Distributed by Self in Italy and abroad, the album was enthusiastically received by the metal press — with Andrea Mastromarco on bass. The record was never properly supported live: drummer Raffaeli's departure for personal reasons, Olivi's relocation to Australia for work, Mauro's new fatherhood from 2008 and Mastromarco's missions with Doctors Without Borders in Africa pushed the band on hiatus in 2007.

In 2013, when Mastromarco returned from Africa, AydrA came back with Luca Calò (Gunfire) and Giuseppe Cardamone (Duality, Zeckyboys) on guitars and Marco Bianchella (Gunfire) on drums. After a new departure of Mastromarco and the arrival of Andrea Massetti on bass, a series of dates in the Balkans supporting Infernal Poetry marked the actual return; from there began the long gestation of the new album. In 2016, a Russian label released an anthology of the band's early works, and AydrA started collaborating with the Roman label Rude Awakening, which reissued their complete discography on limited-edition vinyl, as well as a live album and a Rare Tracks collection featuring demos, covers and special collaborations.

In October 2024, Rude Awakening released Leave to Nowhere, AydrA's first new album in twenty years since Hyperlogical Non-sense. The record — a concept album about the harrowing journey of a migrant from Eritrea to Europe — received enthusiastic acclaim in Italy and abroad, was listed by several outlets among the best albums of the year, and earned an overall review average of 8.51/10.

Riding the success of Leave to Nowhere and with a renewed line-up, AydrA embarked on a new series of live shows across Italy, performing a setlist that retraces the band's three-decade career. In 2026, Rude Awakening releases the definitive CD reissue of Icon of Sin, remastered and expanded with four exclusive bonus live tracks.
