Leave to Nowhere è il terzo album in studio degli AydrA, pubblicato il 10 ottobre 2024 da Rude Awakening Records — a vent'anni dal precedente full-length Hyperlogical Non-sense (2004). È un concept album le cui dieci tracce seguono il viaggio di un migrante dai deserti dell'Eritrea ai centri di detenzione libici, attraverso la traversata del Mediterraneo, fino al silenzio soffocante dei CPR europei.
La storia è di finzione ma profondamente reale: si ispira alle esperienze dirette del bassista Andrea Mastromarco, che — prima di rientrare in formazione — ha lavorato per anni con Médecins Sans Frontières in situazioni critiche in Africa, testimoniando in prima persona le condizioni descritte nell'album.
Sul piano musicale, "Leave to Nowhere" è il lavoro più ambizioso e raffinato che AydrA abbia mai realizzato. Il marchio di fabbrica della band — un technical death metal nel solco di Death, Cynic, Atheist — si arricchisce di arrangiamenti progressivi, cambi dinamici, fraseggi melodici e una scrittura narrativa più affilata. Leave to Nowhere is AydrA's third studio album, released on October 10, 2024 by Rude Awakening Records — twenty years after their previous full-length Hyperlogical Non-sense (2004). It is a concept album whose ten tracks follow a migrant's journey from the deserts of Eritrea, through the detention camps of Libya, across the Mediterranean Sea, into the suffocating silence of the European return centres (CPR).
The story is fictional but grounded: it draws from the direct experiences of AydrA's bassist Andrea Mastromarco, who, before rejoining the band, worked for years with Médecins Sans Frontières in critical situations across Africa, witnessing first-hand the conditions the album describes.
Musically, "Leave to Nowhere" is the most ambitious and refined record AydrA has ever delivered. The band's signature blend of technical death metal — in the tradition of Death, Cynic, Atheist — is enriched by progressive arrangements, dynamic shifts, melodic phrasing and a sharper sense of storytelling. The instrumental title track, written by Andrea Mastromarco, sits at the emotional heart of the album. As a tenth and final track, AydrA includes Psycho Pain Control 2024, a complete rerecording of their very first technical death metal song from 1994 — a 30-year anniversary tribute that bridges past and present.
Recording and mixing took place at WR Studios under the direction of drummer Marco Bianchella (also a member of Gunfire). Mastering was handled by Paolo Ojetti (Infernal Poetry) at Castaway Studios. The cover artwork — a painting titled «Delirio» — is a work by visual artist Luca Morici.
The album was met with international critical acclaim: an average score of 8.51/10 across twenty reviews from Italy, Germany, Spain, USA, Brazil, Greece, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Mexico and beyond. Three publications named it Best Metal Album of 2024 (Noisekeeper, Firstwave Radio Show Canada, Raw and Wild), and Metal Hammer Italy placed it among the top 8 metal albums of the year.

1. Three Minutes Walk

2. Deserter
Il conflitto interiore degli eritrei marchiati come disertori per essere fuggiti dal servizio militare a tempo indeterminato. Il senso di tradimento e isolamento di chi sfugge a una vita di oppressione solo per essere condannato dalla propria nazione come traditore.

3. Black Skin and Red Sand
La traversata del deserto dopo aver lasciato l'Eritrea. Il sole rovente e la sabbia infinita divorano tutto, persino la speranza. «Pelle nera» e «sabbia rossa» evocano la dualità del viaggio: resilienza dei corpi e presenza costante della sofferenza.

6. Make Slaves
La realtà brutale dei centri di detenzione in Libia. Sfruttamento sistemico, lavoro forzato, tortura. «Trasformano in schiavi» — un grido per l'agonia silenziosa di chi resta senza voce.

Dopo l'EP Psycho Pain Control (1996) e i full-length Icon of Sin (1999) e Hyperlogical Non-sense (2004), la band torna nel 2024 con il concept Leave to Nowhere (Rude Awakening Records). AydrA nasce nel 1986 con il nome Hydra. In questo primo periodo la band registra tre demo tape ben accolte dalla stampa specializzata, suonando un genere power/thrash. Queste registrazioni la portano a condividere il palco con band come Strana Officina, Sabotage, Fil di Ferro e Kurnalcool.
Nel 1991, con l'entrata di Mauro Pacetti al basso e alla voce e Francesco Olivi alla chitarra, il genere si sposta verso il thrash/death metal. Vengono registrate altre 2 demo tape e nel 1995, durante un concerto, AydrA viene notata da David Lenci, titolare del Red House Recording, che propone di produrre il loro primo mini-CD. Nel frattempo il sound si è evoluto verso una direzione death metal americana, ispirata da band come Death, Cynic e Atheist. La band partecipa alle compilation Scream from Italy Vol. 2 e 3 (Dawn of Sadness), che pubblica nel 1996 anche il mini-CD Psycho Pain Control. L'uscita ottiene ottime recensioni sulla stampa italiana ed estera e porta AydrA su palchi di tutta Italia insieme a Natron, Undertakers, Sadist, Necromass, Detestor e altri.
Nel 1999 esce il primo full-length, Icon of Sin, attraverso Sound Machine Recordings, prodotto nuovamente da David Lenci e promosso da Kick Promotion Agency. Icon of Sin circola ampiamente tra gli addetti ai lavori, citato da alcune webzine americane tra i migliori album di technical death metal del 1999. AydrA apre i concerti di Napalm Death, Avulsed, Sadist e collabora con Infernal Poetry, Dark Lunacy, Disease e molte altre band italiane. L'album viene anche ristampato in Malesia e Indonesia.
Il secondo LP, Hyperlogical Non-sense, esce nel 2004 in autodistribuzione, prodotto da Frank Andiver (Labyrinth) in collaborazione con Xtreme Rising. Pur ricevendo un'accoglienza entusiasta dalla critica specializzata, l'instabilità della line-up impedisce una promozione live adeguata. Nel 2007, dopo diversi cambi di formazione, la band entra in una lunga pausa.
Nel 2013 Mauro e Andrea riuniscono il gruppo per alcuni live. Andrea lascia poco dopo per ragioni personali (parte per lavorare all'estero con Médecins Sans Frontières in situazioni critiche in Africa — un'esperienza che ispirerà l'album successivo). Al suo posto entra Andrea Massetti. Con una line-up rinnovata, AydrA tiene un tour nei Balcani in supporto agli Infernal Poetry. Nel 2016 esce un'antologia per un'etichetta russa, e un'altra in Panama.

Average score 8.51/10, three #1 Best Metal Album 2024 awards — a triumphant return after twenty years from the previous studio album.
Full bio
AydrA was formed in 1986 under the name Hydra. During this early period the band recorded three demo tapes well received by the specialized press, performing a power/thrash style. This led them to share stages with bands like Strana Officina, Sabotage, Fil di Ferro and Kurnalcool.
In 1991, with the entry of Mauro Pacetti (bass/vocals) and Francesco Olivi (guitar), the band's sound shifted to thrash/death metal. Two more demo tapes followed, and in 1995 a live concert caught the attention of David Lenci, owner of Red House Recording, who offered to produce their first mini-CD. By this time AydrA's sound had evolved towards an American death metal direction, shaped by bands like Death, Cynic and Atheist. The band also appeared on the Scream from Italy Vol. 2 and 3 compilations (Dawn of Sadness), and the Dawn of Sadness label itself released the mini-CD Psycho Pain Control in 1996. The release earned excellent reviews in both Italian and foreign press and brought AydrA to stages across Italy alongside Natron, Undertakers, Sadist, Necromass, Detestor and others.
In 1999, AydrA released their first full-length album, Icon of Sin, through Sound Machine Recordings, again produced by David Lenci and promoted by Kick Promotion Agency. The album was acclaimed as a manifesto of Italian technical death metal. After the album's recordings, Mauro focused solely on vocals and Andrea Mastromarco joined the band on bass. Icon of Sin circulated widely and was cited in American webzines as one of the best technical death metal albums of 1999. AydrA opened for Napalm Death, Avulsed, Sadist and collaborated with Infernal Poetry, Dark Lunacy, Disease and many other Italian bands. The album was also reissued in Malaysia and Indonesia.
A second LP, Hyperlogical Non-sense, was released in 2004 with self-distribution after being produced by Frank Andiver (Labyrinth) in collaboration with Xtreme Rising. Although critically acclaimed, line-up instability prevented a proper live promotion. In 2007, after several line-up changes, the band entered a long hiatus.
In 2013, Mauro and Andrea reunited the band for some shows. Andrea left shortly after for personal reasons (he started working abroad with Médecins Sans Frontières in critical situations across Africa — an experience that would later inspire the next album). Andrea Massetti joined as his replacement. With a revamped line-up, AydrA toured in the Balkans supporting Infernal Poetry. In 2016, an anthology was released by a Russian label, and another came out in Panama.
In 2024 — twenty years after the previous studio album — AydrA returned with their third full-length, Leave to Nowhere (released October 10, 2024 by Rude Awakening Records). A concept album about the desperate journey of a migrant from Eritrea to Europe, drawing from the real-life experiences of Andrea Mastromarco. The album received an average score of 8.51/10, was named Best Metal Album 2024 by three different publications and entered Metal Hammer Italy's year-end top 8. The same year Rude Awakening Records also reissued AydrA's first three albums on limited-edition vinyl, plus the live album Hyperlogical Sin Live 01-13 and the Rare Tracks compilation.
